Extraordinary Pigs is an initiative of Cas den Boer and Josse Haarhuis that focuses on (h)honest meat with respect for animals and nature. Their pigs play an active role in nature management and live under conditions that guarantee the highest level of animal welfare. At some 25 locations in the Netherlands, they work with feed manufacturer Nijsen and other partners to feed the pigs 100% circularly. They get what they root together themselves, supplemented with residual products from the food industry, eliminating the need for additional farmland and preventing food waste. The pigs are born on small-scale farms with 5 to 10 sows and a boar, where they can exhibit plenty of natural behavior. They have 35 times more space than organic pigs, but do not carry an organic label because of their diet. Breeds such as Berkshire, Bonte Bentheimer and Duroc provide flavorful, marbled meat due to their active lifestyles and slow growth.
